Why Not Wednesday - Be Yourself & Rule Your World

Being me-centric need not be arrogant or negatively self-absorbed, indulgent or narcissistic. Too often we deny ourselves quality time with just ourselves as company. Alone does not equal lonely. Spending time in your own head and placing yourself under a self imposed social detox could be just the kick start you need in working towards discovering how best to project yourself to the world. You are incredible, you are unique & the only way to ensure that people get a glimpse of this side of you, is in the acknowledgment that this fabulous self does, in fact, exist. Take time out to learn not only who it is that you are in the present moment, but also how to become the person you'd rather be. What facets of your passion are missing from who you are right now? Realise that you are the only person with the power to shape your present and future and that you can make of it whatever ever you please. You hold the key to infinite possibilities - you have the power to be whatever or whomever you so please. Become it & love it.

With knowing yourself, comes strength and conviction in the character that you know to be the truest version of you. The you that gives body & life to the deepest & most passionate ambitions that were once existent only within your mind. Take pride in who you have become. Accept that it is better to be loved, flaws and all, by just a few; then adored by many, for a censored or falsified version of yourself.

Open yourself up to the joy, contentedness and possibilities that exist only when you allow yourself true independence through ultimate confidence of character. Let your personality & passion shine 100% of the time and revel safe in the knowledge that you are bringing the fabulous everyday, every step of the way, as you ensure you project the greatest version of you.

  • Check out Topdeck or Contiki & put down a deposit on your next holiday, with tours all the planning is taken care of for you, you just need to turn up with your rucksack & a smile! Plan ahead & you could score early bird discounts, now you have an official work towards!

Be sure to keep in mind your own branding style and include a link out to your blog as well as social networking contacts such as twitter and / or skype user names.

  • Get out of the office. Too many of us are guilty of not taking our lunch breaks and while its easy to bang on about the importance of taking your full hour & recharging away from your desk, the reality is, particularly in these times of lowered job security, we simply do not have the hours in the day to step away from our work for our entire allocated lunch break. So why not just take 10, get out & go for a walk. Stretch your legs, grab a coffee, take a daily photo or do some window shopping, just by taking a few minutes to get your mind off your work & will re-energise you for the afternoon.

  • Buy one less Starbucks this week and instead hit the farmers markets on Saturday and treat yourself to a jar of home made jam, some fudge, a cupcake or some fresh veggies. A treat to kick start your weekend all while supporting local produce, it's a worthwhile trade off!

  • Get your favourite photograph printed onto a blocked canvas. Instant & original new wall art to brighten up your flat.

  • Keep your ipod by your bed & when you wake up first, pop it onto your favourite song. Enjoy a bit of silent disco while getting dressed & made up for the day, it is the perfect way to energise minus the caffeine & consequently kick start the day, all without waking up your neighbours, because not everyone will appreciate Mika / Foo Fighters / [insert your version of musical fabulousness] at 7am.

  • Tame the inbox! Unsubscribe from all the newsletters you don't read. Turn off notifications emails from social networking sites that you never open. Set up filters for incoming mail. Add addresses to your address book to ensure you receive the mail you actually want to receive. Make use of folders or archiving functions and free up your inbox for mail that needs to be actioned. Reply to messages within 24-48 hours. Get on top of that inbox & keep it looking spiffy & clean, you know you’ll breath a big 'ol sigh of relief once it's done.

  • Be concise. Ask for what you want. Say what you mean. Keep it simple & to the point.

  • Catch a bus to work instead of a train.

  • Order a different drink at Starbucks.

  • Be a tourist in your own locale. Next weekend, take a day trip to somewhere you've not been (or at least not for a while).

  • Wake up before sunrise, make a cup of tea & some breakfast & watch the sun come up from your apartment window.

  • Skip peak hour, sit in a coffee shop with a newspaper and spend an hour or two letting the rest of the commuting world rush by. Head home a little later & a lot more relaxed.

  • Eat cereal for dinner & pancakes for breakfast (though perhaps not on the one day).

  • Do one of those things people post about on community notice boards that you often consider but never quite get around to actually partaking in: yoga group, Spanish lessons, volunteering at a rest home, charity half marathon etc.

  • Talk to someone in your office that you don't usually converse with. Listen to them.

  • Plan a road trip to reacquaint yourself with your country/state; or discover it for the first time. Take loads of photos.

  • Take a week's holiday from your current job and do work experience in an industry that you wish you worked in. Use your experience as an opportunity to develop relationships and contacts within the industry and as motivation to reach your goal.

Think back to the last time you received a compliment, remember how good it felt, wish it happened more often? Why not let your friends know just how much they mean to you. You know you think positive stuff about your mates all the time, why not share the love and say it aloud? Being nice feels good - so go on, be an awesome friend and give your mates a pat on the back - you know life wouldn't be the same without them in it.

    Why not:
    • Truly personalise their birthday card - use magazine & coloured card, stickers & glitter, write a list of all the fantastic things you just love about them. Give them something to keep & cherish.
    • Leave a cupcake on their desk at work, for no one reason other than that they deserve a treat for being a top friend.
    • If you don't see you friend at work, write them a quick email in the morning telling them that you hope they have a marvelously tremendous day (yes, that good of a day!)
    • Flick them a text every so often, "just wanted to let you know I think you're fabulous!"
    • Be there for them no matter what and make sure they know that you are, there is nothing like knowing that no matter what happens or when, there is someone you can call and rely on, even if it is 2am.
    • Say it in a glance. In a group conversation that you know your mate isn't so comfortable in? Give them that understanding glance, sometimes a glance between mates can say it all and be the comfort that only a real mate can offer.
    • Leave a cute post it note for them on their computer monitor.
    • Have their back, even when you know they're wrong.
    • Tell them straight. "You know I love that about you, how you_______" ... "It's so awesome how you ______" ... "I'm so glad to have you as a mate" ... "I just thought you should know, you are utterly fabulous".

How do you show your mates that they are the best?

Why Not Wednesday - Shop Without A List

Now normally, TL wouldn't go spruiking the idea of anti-frugality, particularly in the midst of a recession, but sometimes you need to mix up your routine... just a touch. Let's throw out the grocery list - this doesn't mean spending more than usual on your budget, just spending it differently.

Grocery lists are all well and good to get what you need without blowing the budget, but they are also a means of slipping into a routine when it comes to meal preparation. Always picking up the same odds and ends to create the same dishes, week after week - sound familiar?

Well then it's time to throw the list out the window and live on the wild side - go on, strut down each aisle like you own the joint: pick up jars of food you can not pronounce let alone begin to know what to do with, try fruits other than an apple or orange, rediscover products that you have long since relegated to the ew, no part of your thinking (seriously, when was the last time you actually tried an olive/seafood/herbs & spices?).

Look at your shopping trip as an adventure that you can enjoy come dinner time, for the next week! Be excited about the options thrust upon you, not daunted. Be a smart consumer & find little known goodies that may soon become staples of the new you grocery list. Food should stir up inspiration & glee in your mind... and kitchen - cooking & eating need not be just another something that is necessary to do!

& while you're out adventuring in the aisles of your local, be sure to throw on a pair of heels & some hot stuff threads - look a million bucks & feel it to - you'll soon see just how much a bit of positivity is conducive to more fun at grocery time.

What strange food do you pledge to throw in your basket?

  • Why Not Wednesday - Button It Up!

5 Comments | Subscribe Email Kate   bloglovin

It's the festive season and craftiness is all part and parcel of getting into the spirit - even if you're not crafty at any other time of year, Christmas is conducive to a little bit of DIY. Creating is a fulfilling experience, one that renders results that you can touch, feel & delight in! Whether you choose to create a little something for yourself or alternatively choose to get your DIY on & whip up a special personalised gift for your favourite few people.

A cute crafty DIY option that is super simple & versatile is to opt for some fun with buttons. There are so many options when it comes to buttons so no matter what style you're going for - you'll find a button to match. So round up a whole ton of buttons: mismatched, sparkly, vintage, big, small, sailor, retro, blingy - whatever it is that rings your bells this Christmas. Take them from old coats & shirts, or new shirts that come with that satchel of extras that no one ever makes proper use of (right?), or hit a local craft store or charity store. Some of the most darling buttons can be found on vintage coats. The coat itself may have a little too much loving wear to still be enjoyed for it's intended use, but don't dismiss it entirely - steal those buttons and put them to good use.

Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling, why not:

  • Glue a few green, red, gold/silver buttons onto the front of a piece of plain card, form a cluster in the corner and do some simplified calligraphy to create a modern DIY christmas card.

  • Take those statement buttons from an old vintage-esqe coat & use on that snug new warm coat you just bought on the high street. Customising your high street coat with some spunky buttons can be just the point of difference you need to stand out from the crowd & look amazing!

  • Grab a whole bundle of mismatched buttons & string together on a piece of thin elastic - hey presto, you have yourself a pretty & unique bracelet.

  • Use a large plain button as a hair piece - simply find a button you love & glue to the end of a hair clip. Another fun alternative to your high street hair accessories.

  • Check out this search of Flickr for some very cute button-y inspiration.

What will you be doing with your random buttons?

  • Why Not Wednesday - Get Into The Christmas Spirit

    Christmas Tree 2006
It's that time of year again - Christmas. Love it or hate it, TL says embrace it. Let Christmas be about creating positivity in your life and the lives of those around you. Make time to catch up with friends you've missed for too long and call your Mum just to say hi. Forget hitting the shops & truly embrace the spirit of Christmas [ not the 'spirit' of consumerism ;) ]. Go on, be sappy - embrace love, peace, joy & the rest of it! Make this festive season one of absolutely fabulousness.

As it has gone 1 December, there are no excuses not to pull out all the stops this festive season, so why not:

  • Enjoy warm mulled wine with your girlfriends

  • Put up a Christmas tree. Even if you live alone in a cramped little shoebox of an apartment - it need not be big & fancy, a 30cm tree from the local dollar store will do the job!

  • Make your own shortbread & wrap individual pieces in cellophane. Take into work & leave the little packages on your coworkers desks.

  • String fairy lights up around your room. Fairy lights make everything a little more magical.

  • Grab your besty & get a photo with Santa- go on!

  • Have a movie night & cue up Love Actually. It is the ultimate feel good modern Christmassy movie... turn it up & sing a long to 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' during the final scenes.

  • Spend the morning with a big bowl latte in Starbucks and enjoy the carols that they are playing at this time of year.

  • Go ice skating, wear ear muffs.

  • Put reindeer antlers on either side of your car (go on, you know you're keen!).

  • Wear dorky festive earrings. You know the type, big dangly, glittery Santa's/Baubles/Snowflakes.

  • In England? Go see a panto!

  • Put some old school Christmas tunes on your iPod. Smile with secret glee when your random play throws you a bit of ...i don't want a lot for Christmas, there is just one thing I need.... I don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree... I just want you for my own... more than you could ever know... make my wish come true... all I want for Christmas, is youuuuuuuu!'.

  • Do some DIY Christmas cards for your best mates & family. Use old magazines to clip pictures & lettering. Other cute, cheap ways to fancy up a DIY card include using buttons, ribbon, glitter & stickers. Be green & utilise recycled paper.

  • Walk your neighbourhood, enjoy everyones efforts to decorate & light up their homes with Christmas lights.

  • Go to Carols by Candle Light! Get your mates together, dress up, bring along a picnic rug & enjoy a night out.

  • Make your own Eggnog!

  • Watch the Chrismakkuh episode of The OC and fall in love with Ryan & Seth all over again.

Why Not Wednesday - Get Your Head Into Style

Why not find some inspiration and experiment with hats, whatever the occasion!

Hats are a fantastic way to inject style into any outfit! They are also a particularly great addition to your wardrobe when you're working with a limited budget, and with just a month to Christmas, that is most of us, right? Hats are also extremely functional at certain times of year - like in winter, when your need that extra bit of warmth (did you know that you lose around 20% - 40% of your body heat through you head?!).

    Beanies&Berets by Tres Lola

Yes! That is a cupcake beanie for all you cupcakette's out there daring enough to give bold a go!

During summer using a hat to protect your face from dangerous UV Rays is an imperitive to maintaining healthy skin - on top of the risk of skin cancer, sun damage can cause wrinkles too. Traditionally, summer is the time to get your hat out and with such a wide variety available, choosing a stylish hat to don for summer is more fun than ever!

    Summer+Hats by Tres Lola

Finally, just like the rest of your wardrobe, hats can also be used as a quirky expression of your character - try rocking a turban, for instance. Sometimes a hat can just be a cute accessory, try these on for size:

    neither clearly masculine nor clearly feminine in appearance;

  • Forget another night of braving the cold come in a glitzy sequinned party dresses; trade for an oversized singlet top & some black skinny jeans. Team with tussled bed hair and accessorise with a simple black clutch and go easy on the makeup, foundation & eyeliner ought to do it.

  • Break the mould at this year's Christmas parties, give the cocktail dress a rest and strut your stuff in a tailored suit. Simple basics, black suit, white shirt & skinny white tie ought to do it. For a more feminine twist, try teaming a tailored suit with a ruffled shirt.

  • Shop like a man. Forget Topshop, check out Topman. Guys don't enjoy the fashion they are lucky enough to have at their disposal so let's give them a hand; try casual flat shoes, brogues, cardi's & shirts.

  • Dust off the Doc's. Don't have a pair? Jump on ebay and grab yourself (an already worn in) a pair. Their quality means they'll last you a lifetime and they can be teamed with anything from jeans to floral sun dresses.

  • Incorporate braces into your corporate wardrobe; try popping a pair on with a loose white shirt tucked into plaid shirts over opaque tights with flat brogues . Do not underestimate the boys/teens section either, us girls tend to be a wee bit smaller/different shaped than the fella's & so if that's the case for you, give the younger male section of stores a go - you'll be amazed at what you find (super fabulous super hero undies are often nearby and while not strictly androgynous they are strictly awesome!).

  • In the market for a new watch? Don't overlook blokes styles - they are often way more edgy & versatile than their feminine counterparts.

  • It's simple, Avril probably scared you out of it for the past few years but the time has come for us non rock/punk/pop star girls to bring back the tie - corporate or casual! If you're still a little afraid wearing a tie may have you regarded as emo or Avril fan (not that there is anything wrong with that, it just may not be the look you so desire); try using a scarf in navy, maroon or brown and tie around your neck in as you would do a tie.

  • Enjoy wide leg trousers with a tucked in shirt or t-shirt and create a sense of mystery with a bowler/trilby hat dipped coyly over one eye.

  • Get your vest out! Worn over a loose fitting crisp white shirt with a neck tie is the epitome of androgynous fabulousness.

Do you ever style yourself as an androgynous girl about town? Share your favourite androgynous style tips/role models!

Why Not Wednesday - People Watching & the Power of Observation

Wikipedia describes observation at the activity of "receiving knowledge of the outside world through the senses". Use your daily observational experiences to grasp a greater understanding of yourself through your relation and reaction to those in your proximity. Take in the motions of others and gain richer gratitude for the experiences you enjoy in your day to day.

Though, observation need not be explored only through watching, but through listening, smelling and touching too. Utilising our other senses may seem somewhat redundant while dealing with the concept of drawing from the experience of observing those around us. However, it is worth remembering that we possess such senses. A simple way to exercise and strengthen our other senses is to close our eyes and hone in on the observations we can still make without our the use of our sight.

    Why not:

  • Take that stool in the window of Starbucks instead of relegating yourself to the far dark back corner. Watch the traffic, the pedestrians, the mums with prams and the suits on their way to and from the office.

  • Close your eyes while sitting in a coffee shop, guess what the women beside you is drinking. You can smell the strong espresso, but is that a sweet caramel note too? What about the deep delicious aroma of cocoa on a chilly morning... breath deep & enjoy. Decide what their coffee says about them, create characters in your mind.

  • Take note of the subtly or otherwise of a persons hand when greeting with a handshake. Imagine just what kind of tasks you imagine they have done with their hands.... are their hands tough from years of toiling away in their prized garden... or soft from dedication to Creme de la Mer?

  • Sit on a park bench with a book in hand, sneakily peering out over the top at the people as they pass. Look at the way they piece together their outfit, draw inspiration and plot your weeks wardrobe.

  • Sit at the back of the bus, watch as people get on board and write prose about the life you imagine they lead.

  • Lay in the grass on a sunny day, close your eyes for a few minutes and listen to the conversations around you. (hey, if they're being had in a park, it can be considered for the taking!) Listen too, for the other sounds you miss out on when rushing through your city ordinarily.

  • Keep an eye out as you go about your day, take one earphone out and stare out, not down, help those who need it - offer seats on public transport, help the person struggling with too many bags, hold the door open for the person with their hands full.

Do you take time out of your busy day/week/life to people watch? Is observation a sorely overlooked simple pleasure and gainful life experience?

  • Have a go at carving a pumpkin! But don't waste the scooped out insides - dice the pumpkin up and make up some parcels of pumpkin and caramelised onion wrapped in puff pastry - glaze with milk and pop in the oven until golden & you've got yourself a snazzy Halloween party snack. Alternatively, a batch of pumpkin soup will warm you and your guests rather nicely.

  • Get your mates together & dress up... whether you are heading out to a Halloween party or staying in to watch scary movies, do it in style. Got no one to dress up with? Go it alone & make a photo shoot of it. Set your camera to self timer and capture your outfit in all it’s glory - then come & share it with us here online!

  • Have a horror movie marathon, invite around all your friends and try not to scare each other too much.

  • Here is one for the brave: Slick on a coat of black lipstick rather than your usual au natural look... gloss it up & off you go!

  • Don't fancy dress ups? Opt for decking yourself out in the traditional Halloween colours: black & orange. Theme it up for the day.

  • Have a girls night in, if its not too cold, pitch a tent and camp out in the backyard... gather around a campfire (or make do with a group huddle around a torch!) and trade ghost stories and urban 'myths' (or are they?!). If it's a bit too chilly to sleep out, do an old fashioned sleepover party - all the girls, doonas & pillows out on the lounge room floor, go on, you're never too old for a sleepover!

Are you celebrating Halloween? What will you be dressing up as?

  • Wear long black silk elbow gloves.

  • Use black liquid liner to emphasise you eyes, encapsulate the sexy sultry female leading lady mode in a glance. Emphasise your lips with red lipstick, apply with a lip brush for accuracy & stay.

  • Ditch your opaques for the day in favour of sheer black seamed stockings. Better yet, go for sheer seamed thigh high suspenders for the ultimate in femme fatale style stealing.

  • Forget colours & glam it up with sophisticated monochromatic black & white.

  • Strut your stuff in sky high ankle strap patent black heels.

  • Show off your curves in a high waisted pencil skirt.

  • Capture femme fatale character; go forth into today with strong will, femininity and a little mystery - but leave it at that - appropriate only the desirable traits of the femme fatale - no dark, cunning manipulation & murderous endeavours need be applied ;) See Lauren Bacall, not Jane Greer.

  • Part your hair, slightly left of the centre, and style with neat & precise loose waves/curls. Hold in place with a spritz of strong hold hairspray.

  • Photograph your femme fatale get up in black & white (& share with a link up in the comments!). Make use of light & shadows in true film noir style. Take a gander at this flickr group for some inspiration.

  • Organise a girls weekend - hit the vintage / op shops, dress up in your new found pieces, take a series of noir photographs and then enjoy a night with a movie marathon film noir style. Better yet - get the boys in on it too! You won't know your boy friends when they're all dapper as film noir men.
