Too often we take those closest to us for granted, expecting to be treated with unconditional love and respect rather without acknowledging that it is gift that our friends bestow upon us and us upon them. Everyone deserves love and respect, but unfortunately, not everyone has gets it and so we need to step up and truly value those around us who give us praise and make us smile.

Think back to the last time you received a compliment, remember how good it felt, wish it happened more often? Why not let your friends know just how much they mean to you. You know you think positive stuff about your mates all the time, why not share the love and say it aloud? Being nice feels good - so go on, be an awesome friend and give your mates a pat on the back - you know life wouldn't be the same without them in it.

Why not:
  • Truly personalise their birthday card - use magazine & coloured card, stickers & glitter, write a list of all the fantastic things you just love about them. Give them something to keep & cherish.
  • Leave a cupcake on their desk at work, for no one reason other than that they deserve a treat for being a top friend.
  • If you don't see you friend at work, write them a quick email in the morning telling them that you hope they have a marvelously tremendous day (yes, that good of a day!)
  • Flick them a text every so often, "just wanted to let you know I think you're fabulous!"
  • Be there for them no matter what and make sure they know that you are, there is nothing like knowing that no matter what happens or when, there is someone you can call and rely on, even if it is 2am.
  • Say it in a glance. In a group conversation that you know your mate isn't so comfortable in? Give them that understanding glance, sometimes a glance between mates can say it all and be the comfort that only a real mate can offer.
  • Leave a cute post it note for them on their computer monitor.
  • Have their back, even when you know they're wrong.
  • Tell them straight. "You know I love that about you, how you_______" ... "It's so awesome how you ______" ... "I'm so glad to have you as a mate" ... "I just thought you should know, you are utterly fabulous".

How do you show your mates that they are the best?

I send them a little poem that's laminated & pretty to their home address & don't tell them about it.

Lovely, lovely post Kate! I love my friends by helping them paint their houses, move their stuff and picking them up from the airport in the dead of night.

I think this could be a good time to tell you how wonderful you are!!! You are living your life the way you want to and are willing to share a little of it with all of us.

I don't think in the last 10 years, I've commercially bought anything for any of my friends, as I make a point of making things either its cards, to presents (then again I'm being cheap)

But I do have to agree with you, if the more people spent 5 minutes a day just doing the little things, like spending a text msg saying Hi, or going out of their way to help a friend out.
