Teetering on the brink of a alternative fantasy realm & a more exciting reality is London's MCM Expo. The scene is set in vivid colour in a scene that could best be described as Halloween on steroids. The mood is one of playful self-expression, excited comfort & jovial energy.
An exhibition dedicated to Movies, Comics and Media; this event sees the worlds of comics colliding with sci-fi and fantasy and the result is two days of panel discussions, exhibition stands with memorabilia and kitsch handmade goodies (wallet made from a laminated comic page, anyone?), group gaming sessions, cosplayers sword battling & posing with fans, world record attempts & autograph sessions with sci-fi stars....
MCM provides a playful & accepting space in which your inner geek is given free reign to come out & partake in the merriment. The event allows this subculture to take centre stage at London's Excel Centre and standing amongst the costumed crowd taking in the animated atmosphere that is omnipresent in this makeshift playground, one question comes to mind: why isn't our world a little more colourful & costumed every day?
Some highlights the expo boasted were a panel discussion with the cast of Merlin, a Guinness World Record attempt, Gareth David Lloyd signing autographs at the Torchwood stand (!) and appearances by Tony Curtis and Linda Hamilton.
Have you ever been to MCM London or a similar event? What is your geek prowess? Are you a sci-fi girl, anime fan... or something in between?
