If you commute to and from the city on week day mornings it would be easy to assume you'd actually gotten yourself lost in a procession of funeral attendees. Long faces looking like they'd belong better on someone who had lost their last friend rather than that of a commuter on their way to the office, pushy fellow commuters who are far to eager to give you a good hard shove in the back to ensure their place in the carriage, suits whose self loathing is matched only by their selfishness - cutting in front of you at ticket barriers and ticket machines...
And so, the joys of city commuting, with a mixture of equal measures immaturity and depression - it is hardly the most positive start to the day - so how does one avoid feeling like they've done a days hard yakka before they've even set foot in the office? Here are a few pointers... be sure to share your tips in the comments:

Oh, now THERE'S a feeling I know all too well, haha! :)
Thankfully, I haven't had to commute for a couple of weeks now, but in the past, I've found that the only way that I could survive was to bring a notebook and write/plot, load my Ipod with lots of songs, or bring a fantastic magazine/book to absorb myself in, so that I wouldn't even notice the time!
Lovely tips, Kate :) - I really enjoyed this post! - At 3 February 2010 at 16:13 , Scribbles said...

Oh it is sooooo funny that you should mention Tiny Dancer! I swear that my Ipod's shuffle mechanism has a little obsession with Tiny Dancer (random, my behind!) as well as the more obscure songs of Bob Dylan. My fav things to do on my commute are readings for uni and catching up on correspondence (nothing else to help me procrastinate LOL) but if I'm catching the train along the waterfront I generally just gaze out at the shore... so pretty!

I read. I have to use motion sickness bands to stop from throwing up when I read though...
I love people watching and writing little stories about what I imagine their lives are like - I do it on the train, in queues, at the park -whenever I can. So much fun. - At 3 February 2010 at 16:14 , Julie said...

Katie, that's great advice. Too bad I don't use public transportation more often (no buses come to my snobby closed neighborhood and no buses go to my snobby college) anyways, I think that some of these would really be useful when I'm stuck in traffic for about two hours trying t get home after a tiring day of college.
Oh BTW, while I read your post it made me think about this post by a friend of mine http://equinoccio.livejournal.com/88097.html mainly the bus part. Her reflection is really interesting and her photographs are amazing.
