Pop Culture Characters That Have Defined Our Generation

Cher Horowitz
The epitome of teenage cool, even if this film was meant to parody teenage lifestyle. Cher has most everything a teenage girl could want but most impressive was her extensive wardrobe complete with outfit matching, the envy of teen girls around the world.

Kat Stratford
An iconic character of a different style, Kat is the intellectual and unassuming lead of this contemporary take on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew'. Making for a refreshing change when pitted against the likes of her younger sister Bianca, the classic teen princess. If it were Cher's wardrobe that drove girls wild with envy in 1995 with the release of Clueless; then it must be Kat's relationship that we covet in this case. There wasn't a girl in any theatre of the world that didn't wish Heath Ledger rendition of "I Can't Take My Eyes Of You' was actually intended for themselves (right!?).

Joey Potter
The quintessential small town girl with a heart of gold who blossoms into a gorgeous and successful young women. Joey's journey, and her relationship with Dawson, was one that struck a chord with many a teenage girl around the world. Catapulting Dawson's Creek to its stance as one of the most successful teenage dramas of television history. In an interesting turn of events, Katie Holmes own story somewhat mirrors that of Joey's. Small town high school theatre lead becomes internationally acclaimed actress working on blockbuster films and married to Tom Cruise in a relationship that is widely considered as one of the biggest Hollywood power couples today.

Marissa Cooper
A more recent iconic character; Marissa was the type of girl that seemed to have it all- wealth, beauty, popularity, friends & family. Series writer Josh Schwartz described the character of Marissa as the 'most beautiful girl you had ever seen' and while such a statement is a matter of subjectivity, for many, Mischa Barton was considered an authority on all things fabulous throughout the 5 years of on-air time that The OC enjoyed. While her star has diminished since the wrap of program in 2007, her portrayal of Marissa will always remain.

Carrie Bradshaw
Arguably the most influential female character of our time. Carrie Bradshaw really does have it all. A successful career, the best girlfriends in the world and Big. She also has New York, a character in itself, lending itself to the Sex series in a huge way. Carrie is not perfect, she certainly has her share quirks which add dimension to the character; though none of which prove a detriment if the success of the Sex & the City series is anything to go by. It's this type of heroine that gives women across the globe hope that it truly is possible to have it all AND be fabulous all the while.

Bridget Jones
Carrie Bradshaw's polar opposite. Vulnerable and emotional but very likable, just as she is. While the opening scene of the Bridget Jones' Diary may depict a rather miserable thirty something women in her pajamas, singing along to tragic power ballads and checking her voicemail to find that no one has checked in, this film, too, builds hope. A character like Bridget Jones may not be as emotionally upstanding and desirable as a fort of jealousy for young women, she shows that it is entirely possible to go from mess to fabulous and gets exactly what she so desires in the end- in the form of dashing English gentleman, Mark Darcy (ding dong!). Bridget is the heroine for single girls who are depressed with their status and for whom no amount of emulating will bring them to be more in line with a character like Ms Bradshaw. Bridget is a beacon of hope too, just without the so American trait of unrelenting self-belief.

The greatest thing about these characters is that they will never fall from grace. Unlike the Hollywood starlets that brought them to life- they will remain It girls of their time, forever in the aisles of DVD stores and in the eworld of IMDB.

Do you have a character from film or television that you feel is particularly relevant to you & your life?
